Stop Harassing Us, Wait Till Nov. 12, Edo Govt Tells APC

LAGOS – The Edo State government has asked the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop harassing the government and wait until November 12 when it would have taken over government.

The government had raised the alarm over what it called a plot by the APC to cripple the state using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to achieve its aim.

This was disclosed on Monday when the state Commissioner for Information, Chris Nehikhare, spoke on Arise TV.

Recall that the EFCC on Thursday arrested the state Accountant General, Mr. Julius Anelu, and four other officials who were signatories to the state government’s accounts.

The state government had explained that the arrest was in connection with alleged agricultural loan facility, which has already been paid by the state government.

Speaking further, Nehikhare said that the governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and his cronies have planned to cripple the state government by claiming that the incumbent government has looted the state treasury.

He said, “The APC should stop harassing us. They’re harassing the civil servants, and it’s unfortunate that the EFCC allowed itself to be used. They should wait till November 12 when they take over to probe the government if they so wish. They shouldn’t go through the back door using the EFCC to harass civil servants.”

On the allegation that the government has looted the state treasury, he said, “The claim is by APC, not EFCC. The EFCC didn’t say that those people were arrested and moved to Abuja because certain money was withdrawn from the treasury. It was APC that was saying that. In fact, Philip Shaibu should be questioned for going away with 31 vehicles belonging to the state.

“The APC has planned to cripple Edo State by raising this false alarm so they can claim to have borrowed money for the inauguration after which they will charge the state exorbitantly”.
